We're kicking off 2017 with a tasting with some of our favorite Austrian producers, Heidi Schrock and Johannes Hirsch.
Regarded as one of the young, leading winemakers in Austria, Johannes Hirsch combines the quality of his renowned vineyards, dedication to viticulture and precise winemaking to craft wines of the highest class. Johannes works exclusively with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, bottling most of his cuvees as single site, single terroir wines.
Those of you who attended our Austrian wine tasting last January will remember Heidi, one of the most charming women in the wine world. Heidi is from the historic village of Rust situated in the province of Burgenland about 5 miles from the Hungarian border. She re-introduced historic varietals such as muscat-lunel and furmint from Hungary while continuing to work with more classic Austrian varietals such as grauburgunder, weissburgunder, and welschriesling. Heidi is the long-time leader of Cercle Ruster Ausbruch, an organization whose goal is to bring back Ausbruch, a sweet wine reminiscent of Hungary’s Royal Tokaji that had not existed since the phylloxera outbreak in the 19th century. Ausbruch is harvested from botrytised grapes and Heidi’s wine is one of Rust’s iconic examples of this noble sweet wine.
Tickets for this event are $15 per guest and are by reservation only. Please email brettsoifwine@gmail.com to reserve a seat. As always, wine club members are allowed one free seat. Please click here for more info on the wine club.
